  • Improved sleep quality[1] – maximize control of your circadian rhythm. Your body doesn’t signal melatonin unless you have a strong supply of melanopsin [2]. Note that common blue blockers don’t cover the wavelengths that impact melanopsion.
  • Reduced brain inflammation – increased melatonin release = lower brain inflammation
  • Supported weight loss – Leptin is a light sensitive hormone that peaks at night and signals to our brains how much fat storage we have. Red light and darkness move leptin levels into patterns associated with less hunger. [3]
  • Increased energy and focus – Better sleep and less eye strain result in more energy.
  • Inhibited conditions that can be caused or made worse by light at night: such as macular degeneration and other vision problems [4] [5], cancer, aging, diabetes, stroke, obesity, neurodegenerative diseases, autoimmunity and gastric conditions.

Patent pending TrueDark Twilight is the first and only solution designed to filter out ALL of the sleep and performance robbing wavelengths in the evening hours.

TrueDark™ Twilight patented lenses protect you from junk light #stopjunklight
TrueDark™ Twilight patented lenses protect you from junk light #stopjunklight

Your entire physiology is impacted by the spectrum of light that is absorbed by your eyes. Make that impact positive with TrueDark™ Twilight.

Circadian disruption has been attributed to the increase of risk of heart disease, depression, learning issues, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome and many other conditions currently plaguing modern societies. Unfortunately, we are surrounded by “junk light” from nearly all artificial light sources including LEDs, computer screens, florescent lights and TVs. TrueDark glasses from Biohacked filter out the right wavelengths of junk light. That allows your brain and body to make more good hormones like melatonin.

A common solution for daytime protection has been “blue blocker” glasses, including TrueDark Daywalker, that filter out the harmful visual blue light spectrum.

What your eyes don’t see

A recent discovery has shed new light (yep, that’s a bad pun) on exactly how our eyes respond to blue light. And it turns out that the long-held assumption that circadian rhythm was set by “seeing” light isn’t strictly correct.

While it’s true that exposure to too much blue light does negatively influence physiology, new research shows that there is a second, more dominant and important system that is responsible for setting your circadian rhythm, sleep patterns and hormones. This system is based on a photopigment called melanopsin.IMG_20170303_134814064

Unlike the standard rod and cone structure of the eye which helps us see, melanopsin doesn’t help us see. Instead, it reacts to light wavelengths and is the primary regulator of our biological clock and our production of melatonin. Without melanopsin your melatonin production suffers.

Based on this research, the patent pending TrueDark Twilight lenses were developed for use in the key 2+ hours before you go to sleep.

Mel-a-what?

Understanding the the relationship between melatonin production and melanopsin sensors is key to finding your optimal performance.

Melatonin is great! It’s a hormone that you naturally produce that is responsible for regulating sleep patterns and reducing inflammation in the brain. However, that’s not the entire story.

Melanopsin cells in your eyes are the foundation for taking sleep and brain health to a whole new level. Melanopsin absorbs light and triggers a biochemical cascade that sends signals to your brain about brightness. Daylight is usually bright light and features colors like blues, greens and yellows. Melanopsin basically tells your body that it is daytime!  When the melanopsin cells in your eyes detect light less melatonin is produced. That could be daytime real light or artificial junk light from your computer monitor. That makes you feel more awake. This potentially contributes to many other health issues since our hormones and neurotransmitters are under circadian control.

On the other hand, when it is dark and melanopsin cells don’t detect “daytime” light, more melatonin is produced. That helps you feel tired, helping you sleep and helping your circadian rhythm stay in tune.

Here’s why TrueDark™ Twilight works

TrueDark Twilight filters ALL the junk like at night!
TrueDark Twilight filters ALL the junk like at night!

You’ve likely seen the explosive growth of “blue blocker” glasses, based on helping to support melatonin production. They are a great solution during daytime hours. But blocking just the blue light spectrum isn’t enough when you head into the evening hours just before bed. Melanopsin cells are acutely sensitive to junk light and will stop your body creating melatonin. Melanopsin is sensitive to a broader spectrum of light, so “blue blocker” glasses don’t protect you from melanopsin-stimulating junk-light wavelengths during the most important time of the day — right before bed when you want your circadian rhythm to be in prime shape to help you sleep.

After a day of wearing blue blockers or avoiding junk light, prime the pump by being sure your melanopsin isn’t being stimulated by your environment. Melanopsin stimulation will prevent melatonin from being signaled for release!

TrueDark Twilight prevents your melanopsin cells from detecting the wrong wavelengths of light at the wrong time of day. It protects your melanopsin from the entire spectrum that negatively impacts your biological clock. Wear them for 2 to 4 hours before bed. (Hint: Blue is only one of the wavelengths that impacts your sleep cycles.)

Only TrueDark™ Twilight has the patent pending process that filters out the wavelengths that stimulate melanopsin sensors — maximizing your sleep quality, performance, and health.  They only have to be worn in the few hours before you go to sleep at night.

How to use TrueDark™ Twilight

The patent pending lenses are in a wrap around frame to block light from the sides and have specially designed soft foam around the inside border to prevent light leakage from the top. Plus they have a removable prescription insert that your local eye doctor can fill.

Transform TrueDark Twilight into prescription glasses. Each pair includes an insert that you can fill. The pair on the left shows the insert and the pair on the right shows the glasses with the insert installed.

Read your kindle or tablet before bed! Combine all of these fantastic features, and you end up with a fully loaded, but slightly dorky, pair of glasses. Luckily while TrueDark Twilight glasses are perfect for the few hours before you go to sleep, they are overkill for use during the day. In fact, if you wear them during the day, you’ll get tired. Use common sense and avoid driving, using heavy machinery or other actions that may be impacted by becoming tired, a change in depth perception or changes on the color spectrum. Begin use for a short period of time, and work up to 2-4 hours as you adjust to the new experience and deeper sleep.

If you like taking power naps, feel free to wear your Twilight for a few minutes to get you ready for your nap.

You’ll still want to begin filtering the plain blue spectrum in the afternoon or in particularly harsh artificial light (office, airplane, trade shows…the list is endless). Outdoor LED lights contain about five times more blue light than incandescent bulbs. This is where our traditional blue light blocking glasses come into play. TrueDark™ Daywalker are blue blockers that are both stylish and perfect for day time and early evening use.

Who should use TrueDark™?

Our hormones and neurotransmitters are under circadian control. This affects almost every condition you can think of that plagues modern life. Conditions that are made worse or in part caused light at night include: cancer and aging, diabetes, stroke, obesity, multiple sclerosis, psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, autoimmunity, gastric conditions, bipolar mania and even sleepless nights for breastfed infants and their mothers.

  • Anyone over the age of 60 – after 60 — the body produces very little melatonin. TrueDark Twilight will help with sleep by resetting the internal clock via melanopsin.
  • Mothers who are breastfeeding – infants don’t produce their own melatonin, so they rely on the mother’s hormones, including melatonin. When the mother has healthy levels, they are transmitted via breast milk to set their infants “master clock”, resulting in better sleep at night for your baby (and you!)
  • Shiftworkers – Light at night which accompanies shiftwork is listed as a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Light at night has shown to be highly associated with significantly the risk of hormone specific such as cancers of the breast and prostate.
  • Biohackers – When looking for an edge in your mental or physical performance, sleep and hormone production are a mainstay.
  • Weight loss – Leptin is a master hormone and signals to our brains how much fat storage we have. Its levels peak at night. Leptin and ghrelin are the two main hunger hormones in our body. Both leptin and ghrelin are light sensitive. Red light and darkness move leptin and ghrelin into patterns that are (context dependent) associated with less hunger, while blue light does the opposite and can move both into patterns associated with more hunger.
  • Office workers – by poor overhead flickering fluorescent light, or overly blue tinged LEDs, while staring at a bright computer screen for 8-10 hours per day.
  • Airplane travelers – Stop Junk Light. Stop (or at least drastically reduce) jet lag caused by junk light and time zone changes. The overhead lights on airplanes are harsh. The outside light also comes in from the windows, but your brain isn’t programmed to have bright light coming from the side, with harsh light from above. It’s exhausting and drags your hormones down. Wearing either TrueDark glasses on a plane, along with a ballcap, will make a huge difference in your travel experience!

To give your eyes a break from the normal junk-light of the day, and to be sure you have a pair with style for wearing in public, we suggest you check out TrueDark Daywalker for use during the day too. To maximize your biology, use the stylish TrueDark Daywalker throughout the day when you’re in artificial light, then use TrueDark Twilight 2-4 hours before going to sleep. I am highly satisfied with both pairs of these glasses. Functionally, the Daywalkers help me relax, especially in fluorescent lighting. The Twilight pair also create a noticeable improvement in my sleep quality. I can feel my muscles relax, and it is easier to breathe deep when wearing them. I am impressed. Note that I am a person who has always been averse to artificial light; in high school, I ate breakfast in the dark on winter mornings rather than turn on the fluorescent kitchen lights! If you aren’t as sensitive as me, you might not notice as great of a benefit as I have.

Structurally, the glasses are sturdy and flexible. My only complaint is that the Twilights don’t hug the sides of my face closely, and there is not way to snap and adjust the width. Therefore, light sources diagonally behind me will leak in the cracks and glare on the lenses. This doesn’t seem to disrupt the melatonin/melanopsin function, but it is unpleasant.

I recommend both of these glasses.

Never thought I’d like what the day and night glasses do for me as much as I do know! Am a bulletproof diet patron so once I saw Asprey push these, I figured I’d try. Truly love what they do!

Daytime, helps me keep my head focused when using a computer or just cooking.

Nighttime, they help me fall asleep in an easy manner in addition to bulletproof sleeping pills.

My only complaint is that they are tough to clean and I’m not sure if the best lens quality. Regardless, I recommend both of these glasses for their benefits in mitochondria during the day and melatonin at night!

    • Hi Andy, thanks for the review! They ARE a bit tough to clean mostly because of the wrap-around shape, along with the prescription insert. I use Zeiss lens cleaning wipes (available from Amazon for a few cents each), which makes short work of any cleaning task on the lenses.

Great product! Totally comfortable after computer time at work. I even feel great after a day under floresent light. Love how they help me feel super fantastic!

Love, Love these! I’ve always been a bit sensitive to light and have used Irlens screening and screens in the past. They make everything crisper and better. I’m 43 and in medical school, eye strain and late night studying is no longer a problem. Slept better the first night!

I have had trouble sleeping for 15 plus years and have worn blue blockers in the evening for some relieve with insomnia. Now I have had the best nites sleep since switching to my true dark glasses. They are the most successful biohack of all many things I do for my “past” insomnia. What a difference. Thank you so much and your customer service is very good. Now I don’t need as much bullet proof coffee.

Great glasses but kinda disappointed by the cheap material used for the frames. For the price we pay, better material could have been used like those in prescription glasses we get at opticial shops.

    • (verified owner)

Hi Aaron, Thanks for your review! We spent a looooong time finding a material for the frames that was strong, flexible and lightweight enough to wear for extended period. We’re constantly refining our designs and materials based on feedback like yours and I’ll make sure your feedback makes it make to the product team.

Only had one evening with the Twilight, and I need to fill the prescription glasses insert. However I have had experience with Swanwick and Melavision, and, in comparison, these are “truly dark” and will help me tremendously. Mainly want to pay tribute to the customer service of this fine company – responded immediately and appropriately to a product/shipping issue.

Great glasses – could be more stylish, but they are very functional and seem to help me go to sleep easier and sleep better. They cut out all of the bad light at night and put me in a calmer frame of mind!

I’ll have to get back with a review on the daywalkers as I haven’t worn them long enough to give an accurate review but the Twilight have helped me fall asleep quickly and stay asleep! As little as 15 minutes with them on before bed and I start to get very tired! Quickly makes me calm and sleepy.

Just got them in the mail,
been wearing the daywalker on my computer and whats weird is I don’t have to even wear my prescription glasses. I usually have to wear glasses because computer monitors tire my eyes in minutes without them. Daywalker been on all day and I forgot I even need glasses. Must be all the contrast taken out or something not sure! but i love it. The style isn’t exactly my style but not complaining

I’ve been using the daywalker and twilight glasses for more than a week. Use of the daywalker had an immediate impact. At the end of the day my eyes were not tired and feeling heavy — an enormous improvement. I can read twice as long without having to rest my eyes. A majority of my work is done using the computer so I wear the glasses all day long when I am inside under artificial lights. I suspect less stress on the eyes is also resulting in less stress on the head and shoulders. I feel more refreshed in the evenings. As recommended I switch to the twilight glasses three hours before bed time. As a consequence I can do more reading before bed and I will fall asleep immediately. These glasses have done as advertised and I am now using Bulletproof Eye Armour in conjunction with the glasses and hope to report back with even better results. I have already recommended your glasses to others that I care about.

  13. Spot on with this write-up, I truly think this website needs much more consideration. I?ll probably be again to read much more, thanks for that info.

The glasses work and do what they are supposed to do but unfortunately, they are quite ugly compared to, say Swannwick glasses, so I can’t wear the stuff in public. Wish the Daywalkers had a better looking design.

    • (verified owner)

Hi Sven, you might want to look into the prestige Daywalkers, both the Daywalker Elite and Daywalker Elan are made from aluminum and are designed to look great on anyone’s face! The Twilights are designed to be worn in the comfort of your own home at night and are therefore designed to be supremely functional rather look beautiful.

Dewalt laser red glasses are significantly less expensive and just as good. Their lenses are nearly the same.

    • (verified owner)

Hi John, weeellll….. if by “nearly the same” you mean they both are kind of red then you’re probably right. However, that’s where the comparison ends Our patent-pending Twilight lenses are multi-layer and are specifically tuned to filter ALL the frequencies that will activate your melanopsin infused sensors and thereby affect your biology. The laser safety goggles are great for, well, eye protection from lasers at a single specific frequency range. Yep, they’re cheaper.
