Unfortunately, we are surrounded by “junk light” from nearly all artificial light sources including LEDs, computer screens, florescent lights and TVs. What your eyes don’t see

A recent discovery has shed new light (yep, that’s a bad pun) on exactly how our eyes respond to blue light. And it turns out that the long-held assumption that circadian rhythm was set by “seeing” light isn’t strictly correct.

While it’s true that exposure to too much blue light does negatively influence physiology, new research shows that there is a second, more dominant and important system that is responsible for setting your circadian rhythm, sleep patterns and hormones. This system is based on a photopigment called melanopsin.IMG_20170303_134814064

Unlike the standard rod and cone structure of the eye which helps us see, melanopsin doesn’t help us see. Instead, it reacts to light wavelengths and is the primary regulator of our biological clock and our production of melatonin. Without melanopsin your melatonin production suffers.

Based on this research, the patent pending TrueDark Twilight lenses were developed for use in the key 2+ hours before you go to sleep.


Understanding the the relationship between melatonin production and melanopsin sensors is key to finding your optimal performance.

Melatonin is great! It’s a hormone that you naturally produce that is responsible for regulating sleep patterns and reducing inflammation in the brain. However, that’s not the entire story.

Melanopsin cells in your eyes are the foundation for taking sleep and brain health to a whole new level. Melanopsin absorbs light and triggers a biochemical cascade that sends signals to your brain about brightness. Daylight is usually bright light and features colors like blues, greens and yellows. Melanopsin basically tells your body that it is daytime!  When the melanopsin cells in your eyes detect light less melatonin is produced. That could be daytime real light or artificial junk light from your computer monitor. That makes you feel more awake. This potentially contributes to many other health issues since our hormones and neurotransmitters are under circadian control.

On the other hand, when it is dark and melanopsin cells don’t detect “daytime” light, more melatonin is produced. That helps you feel tired, helping you sleep and helping your circadian rhythm stay in tune.

Here’s why TrueDark™ Twilight works

You’ve likely seen the explosive growth of “blue blocker” glasses, based on helping to support melatonin production. They are a great solution during daytime hours. But blocking just the blue light spectrum isn’t enough when you head into the evening hours just before bed. Melanopsin cells are acutely sensitive to junk light and will stop your body creating melatonin. Melanopsin is sensitive to a broader spectrum of light, so “blue blocker” glasses don’t protect you from melanopsin-stimulating junk-light wavelengths during the most important time of the day — right before bed when you want your circadian rhythm to be in prime shape to help you sleep.

After a day of wearing blue blockers or avoiding junk light, prime the pump by being sure your melanopsin isn’t being stimulated by your environment. Melanopsin stimulation will prevent melatonin from being signaled for release!

TrueDark Twilight prevents your melanopsin cells from detecting the wrong wavelengths of light at the wrong time of day. It protects your melanopsin from the entire spectrum that negatively impacts your biological clock. Wear them for 2 to 4 hours before bed. How to use TrueDark™ Twilight

The patent pending lenses are in a wrap around frame to block light from the sides and have specially designed soft foam around the inside border to prevent light leakage from the top. Plus they have a removable prescription insert that your local eye doctor can fill.

Read your kindle or tablet before bed! Combine all of these fantastic features, and you end up with a fully loaded, but slightly dorky, pair of glasses. Luckily while TrueDark Twilight glasses are perfect for the few hours before you go to sleep, they are overkill for use during the day. In fact, if you wear them during the day, you’ll get tired. Use common sense and avoid driving, using heavy machinery or other actions that may be impacted by becoming tired, a change in depth perception or changes on the color spectrum. Begin use for a short period of time, and work up to 2-4 hours as you adjust to the new experience and deeper sleep.

If you like taking power naps, feel free to wear your Twilight for a few minutes to get you ready for your nap.

You’ll still want to begin filtering the plain blue spectrum in the afternoon or in particularly harsh artificial light (office, airplane, trade shows…the list is endless). Outdoor LED lights contain about five times more blue light than incandescent bulbs. This is where our traditional blue light blocking glasses come into play. Who should use TrueDark™?

Our hormones and neurotransmitters are under circadian control. This affects almost every condition you can think of that plagues modern life. Conditions that are made worse or in part caused light at night include: cancer and aging, diabetes, stroke, obesity, multiple sclerosis, psychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases, ADHD, Alzheimer’s, autoimmunity, gastric conditions, bipolar mania and even sleepless nights for breastfed infants and their mothers.

  • Anyone over the age of 60 – after 60 — the body produces very little melatonin. TrueDark Twilight will help with sleep by resetting the internal clock via melanopsin.
  • Mothers who are breastfeeding – infants don’t produce their own melatonin, so they rely on the mother’s hormones, including melatonin. When the mother has healthy levels, they are transmitted via breast milk to set their infants “master clock”, resulting in better sleep at night for your baby (and you!)
  • Shiftworkers – Light at night which accompanies shiftwork is listed as a probable carcinogen by the World Health Organization. Light at night has shown to be highly associated with significantly the risk of hormone specific such as cancers of the breast and prostate.
  • Biohackers – When looking for an edge in your mental or physical performance, sleep and hormone production are a mainstay.
  • Weight loss – Leptin is a master hormone and signals to our brains how much fat storage we have. Its levels peak at night. Leptin and ghrelin are the two main hunger hormones in our body. Both leptin and ghrelin are light sensitive. Red light and darkness move leptin and ghrelin into patterns that are (context dependent) associated with less hunger, while blue light does the opposite and can move both into patterns associated with more hunger.
  • Office workers – by poor overhead flickering fluorescent light, or overly blue tinged LEDs, while staring at a bright computer screen for 8-10 hours per day.
  • Airplane travelers – Stop Junk Light. Stop (or at least drastically reduce) jet lag caused by junk light and time zone changes. The overhead lights on airplanes are harsh. The outside light also comes in from the windows, but your brain isn’t programmed to have bright light coming from the side, with harsh light from above. It’s exhausting and drags your hormones down.     Since I got the glasses, I put them on at least 2 hours prior of sleeping. and with the application on my smartphone, I been going into deep sleep for a minimum of 3 hrs every night. works amazing and my sleep has gotten way better just in few days

    TrueDark has provided me with better preparation for sleep. Beginning an hour before bed, I feel a real sense of the emotions calming, the muscle behind and around eyes resting. Lying on my back in bed with TrueDark on in, can’t see my hands in front of my face, I drop into a great slumber.

    Amazing. I dont use them exactly right, because I like them while I’m driving. I can say that over the past two weeks, I’ve added 1-2 hours more sleep per night since I started using both these and the fancy-framed yellow ones together. I work in a building with no windows, though, so every little bit helps. One of my favorite purchases this year, no doubt.

      Hi Robert, Thanks for your review! I just wanted to check that you are not wearing your Twilights (the red ones) while driving. It’s tempting to do that with all the weird light and glares that you get while on the road, but please be aware that we don’t consider it safe — the color desaturation makes it difficult to distinguish various signalling lights and can also vary your depth perception. Wearing the Daywalkers (yellow) while driving is fine and very effective.

      Hi Sajid, I’m sorry about your concern regarding light leakage. Everyone’s head is a little different but we’ve found that wearing a hat or cap can help stop light leaking in from the top with the Twilights. For the Daywalkers, some light leakage is desirable.

    I’ve tried multiple blue light blocking glasses from the orange construction glasses to fancy orange aviator glasses and to be honest, these are the best performing ones I’ve had. They really fully block blue light with their deep orange color and the pad around the glasses that prevent light from coming in on the sides. I can now easily fall asleep within 10 minutes even after reading books on my tablet in bed. These have also been very helpful while traveling to sleep on the plane and help with jet lag on arrival. Definitely recommend!

    I’ve had my set for about a week now and I may be turning from cheerleader into prophet for this tech. We have mostly LED lighting with some CFLs. I put on the Daywalker Elites 3-4 hours before bed and change over to Twilights after we put the kids in bed. That puts me in Twilghts for about 2 hours before I go to sleep…usually by 1am.

    In the past week, with no other changes to my routine, I am waking up less often throughout the night (i.e. not at all unless a kid kicks me) and I am waking up more fully rested. After the first night, I was really worried that I’d drunk too much of Dave’s “Kool-Aid”, however the effect has persisted now for a solid week.

    Oh, my wife sneaks my Daywalkers when I change into the Twilights. Looks like I’m ordering another set in the near future.

    I’m still trying to figure out how to describe how different I feel while awake and wearing these lenses. Increased calm, more centered, something new-agey like that with both pairs, just much more profound with the Twilights.

    I have had the TrueDark glasses for a few weeks now and am so happy with this purchase. When I decide to sit down and watch some TV in the evening, I put them on and my eyes are immediately thankful and feel more rested. My eyes have always been very light-sensitive, and an ophthalmologist told me a long time ago to try to avoid fluorescent light. The first time I wore the TrueDarks watching TV for a short period of time, I peaked out from behind them and was absolutely astounded at how bright the TV appeared! Almost painful!! Also, it doesn’t take long at all to start feeling sleepy. Falling sleep is easy after wearing them. I am finding I do sleep better and am seeing better results tracked with my Fitbit Charge 2 (for whatever that’s worth!). I also have the Daywalker Elites and keep them next to my computer and iPad. I now don’t even look at the screen without them! If I am working on something which requires more acuity, I insert Hydrotac stick-on magnifier lenses into them. Easy. Having no difficulty cleaning the lenses. I just rinse and use a lens cloth. My eyes are feeling much more relaxed. I highly recommend these, without hesitation! The customer service with this company is superb. Five Star thanks to John and Antonio for responding to questions I had.

    Used them for the first time on my transatlantic flight going east. Usually I’m jet lagged for 4-5 days but after using the TrueDark twilight glasses for the entire 8 hour flight I not only for the first time slept 5 hours (never done that in the air before) but also experienced virtually no jet lag!!

    If you are flying across timezones this is a must have! And that people are looking at you like you’re crazy in your hat and glasses is just an added bonus.

    I wear my custom clear lens blue blocking glasses by day, and about an hour before sleep I will throw on my true dark glasses. Love them and sometimes I fall asleep with them on! You just feel your mind and body start getting more tired the longer you have them on. Love it

    I work rotating shifts. 4 on 4 off. Days 5:30-5:30 then nights 5:30pm to 5:30am. What would you suggest? Wear the red ones 2 hours before shift ends but then I have a 40 min drive home. So would I wear something else driving home? Thx.

    • Hi Debby! we definitely recommend not wearing the red glasses when you drive, as the light-filtering properties are so strong you will not be able to see green or yellow traffic lights! We recommend wearing our Daywalker glasses during your entire shift and wearing Twilight glasses 30 mins – 2 hours prior to getting into bed and shutting off the lights. When you need to switch shifts, putting Twilight glasses on for 2 hours prior to when you WANT to fall asleep will prime your body and get it to release serotonin and other hormones important for sleep. It should help! Thanks!
